[edit] History

It was named by Captain James Cook as he sailed north along the east coast in 1770. The Aboriginal name for Pigeon House Mountain is Didhol or Dithol, which means woman's breast.

[edit] Ascending the summit

Pigeon House Mountain is 720 metres above sea level. At the summit walkers are rewarded by a spectacular 360 degree vista of the beaches and Pacific Ocean to the east and the magnificence of the Budawang Mountains and the Clyde River Valley to the west. The walk from the base to the summit and back to the carpark is about 5km and takes around 4 hrs of average fitness. There are metal steps and ladders near the summit to assist climbers.

[edit] Amenities

There are toilets and picnic tables at the base of the mountain and parking for about 25 cars.

[edit] Getting to Pigeon House

Once you have turned into Croobyar Road from Milton and then taken Woodstock Road, the final road out to Pigeon House (Ridge Road), is unsealed for much of the way and at certain times can be very corrugated, much like the road out to the Blueberry Farm. If you have concerns for taking your car there and can't afford car hire (or are not permitted to take a hire car on unsealed roads), you could consider hiring a utility truck from Meg Haven Hire in Ulladulla. The vehicle can seat 3 people and the cost is reasonable as the utes are mostly used for local trips to the rubbish tip, and not for scenic drives.

Another route to Pigeon House is Wheelbarrow Road which is off the Princes' Highway, 3km south of Burrill Lake. Wheelbarrow Road is unsealed and joins up with Woodstock road for the final sealed section before turning off at Ridge Road.

[edit] Wildlife

Ant hills and Goannas are common around Pigeon House.
